In expectancy of its young release , Screen Rantspoke alone with writer Paul Giacoppo to discussKamandi : The Last male child on Earth ! , conform Jack Kirby ’s unique world , the hindsight of develop an apocalyptic tarradiddle , and more .
Screen Rant : I knew nothing about Kamandi before the short , and now all I want to do is memorise more about him .
Paul Giacoppo : Can we just stop it there , like interview ’s over , just spell that ! [ Laughs ]
Oh my god , literally that ’s everything we had trust for with this . DC shorts are all about telling people who obscure , but really cool , characters in the DC universe are and then order a tale that makes you want to get it on more about them . When I was part into animation , I was checking outBruce Timm ’s Justice League showand they just have every part they could cogitate of at the time , especially when they did Justice League Unlimited .
That was my first veridical experience with The Question as an vivify character and beam Knight and Vigilante , and they just supervise to make them all so cool . I remember Bruce Timm saying something like , " Yeah , we draw The Question for the show , and now all I want to do is Question fib , " and I think Jeremy and Jen did a fantastic Book of Job with the Blue Beetle short .
I could n’t concord more , that one was hysterical . This whole showcase was really quite the awe-inspiring collection of shorts . I love you ’ve work throughout the animated comic book genre for a while now , but how did your involvement with Kamandi come about ?
Paul Giacoppo : Well , Jim Krieg and I have been want to work on something together ; he ’s reached out about a few projects . Then he called me up and said , " What do you think about Kamandi ? We want to do a forgetful . " That was the whole matter : Kamandi unforesightful . I was like , " Yes , absolutely . " I knew of the character and his worldly concern in real general terms - not like you , who are completely new to the character . I had some familiarity with the type and the figure of speech .
I think I knew what it was about , and he only makes one alive visual aspect that I know of , which was onBatman : The Brave and the Bold ; he was in a couple of episodes of that show . He also gets mention in Grant Gustin ’s The Flash in an off - hand sort of commentary . That ’s about it .
When we looked into this , we ’re like , " Wow , this cosmos is fashion more expansive than we thought it to be . How do we find a little tale that place up his world and is contained enough that you could separate it in the amount of time we have ? And which characters say you the most of the wacky world ? Which fictitious character should we include and which when should we not and how much time do we have to do all of this ? " The hard part was what to let in and what not to .
You ’ve indite shorts before . Would you say that paring down the world for this short was your full-grown challenge on this ?
Paul Giacoppo : Yeah , exactly . I ’m trying to think of how would you take any dealership that ’s really huge , tell a lilliputian write up and show it to somebody who ’s never seen any of it and go , " Oh , this is what that total dealership is . " It ’s really take exception to do . Fortunately , there was this one narration that was in the compilation called The Mighty One that Jack Kirby had written , and I just fell in love with it .
As we mouth about dissimilar tale to tell , whether to make up a compiling story or to adjust one , I hit on this one and Jim Krieg did the same . He ’s like , " I think we should do this , " and I tell , " I palpate like we can do this one justice . " There ’s enough familiarity to the situation that we can set it up quickly , and then everything that you need for Kamandi can be put into the story and allow for the character to go on a journey that ’s a little bit familiar ; going through run and trials or trap . But along the way of life , we show iconic image , like the cover of Kamandi No . 1 with him on the spate in front of the fallen Statue of Liberty and all of that .
There were a tidy sum of moments we could put in , but it was the beginning , middle and , what I loved , kind of a surprise ending that the world you ’ve been see doesconnect to the DC Universe . An original story was also a little bit more obvious that it was Superman all along , it was much more of a conflict for the cape and the suit and fighting for man ’s laurels in a direction , but this was much more about Kamandi demonstrating the traits of what it means to be a hero along the style , and sort of surprising the audience with that , so that was the Leslie Townes Hope .
Since you did pull so much from that issue , what was it like essay to craft these tense action chronological sequence around all of that graphic symbol development ?
Paul Giacoppo : The [ main matter ] was , " How do you show enough of the world that you show how gaga , but you do n’t dwell on anything for too long ? " We debated which characters to include , I wanted to include Dr. Canus , both Jim Krieg and I want to admit Flower , a human character reference that he come down in sexual love with and loses in the narrative , but we gain that was too bass of a story , it would be too much about that and not about the world as much .
He was the one to include Ben Boxer , who ’s the mutant man , which I was like , " It ’s gon na be a short too puzzling if there are two humankind when he ’s the last homo . " But it actually is another thing that discover the domain between , say , a Planet of the Apes type . That idea of what are other way of life human race tried to cope with what was happening in this great catastrophe that happened ? So I recollect it was pretty coolheaded .
I get laid that the production on this come prior to pandemic back in the studio . What was it like working with Matt to really help find the right vision for this account ?
Paul Giacoppo : These stories almost always start with myself and a account editor of a TV show or producer or executive director , and we ’re just focusing on the story . Because there was already a visual design here , it had already been mentioned and talk about that we ’re fail to seek to make each of these underdrawers , especially this one , expect as much like the original inspired artwork as potential . So it does n’t just tell a tale that ’s like it , but it reckon like the art flair from it .
That was a enceinte sigh of embossment , because oftentimes you ’re ferment on a property that you do n’t have a go at it what it ’s going to calculate like in its last shape , even if it ’s a familiar one , and a new DC or Marvel series might not look like you anticipate it when you might do a new take on it . But in this lawsuit , because they were break down to hear tostick to Kirby ’s style , it was really wonderful . I could just put that away and know in my judgment what it was gon na look like - and more than anything I ’ve ever drop a line , this looks more like what I await it to look like .
I ’m also in ocular effects , I work in film , but when I indite stories , it ’s like , " It ’s really coolheaded , it ’s not quite what I was picturing , but this is slap-up . " This almost looks just like I had storyboarded it almost , and that was more pick up what we had written and then running with it . Kirby was the lead light on this one .
Did you also get to participate at all in watching the cast recordings for the forgetful ?
Paul Giacoppo : Normally I do , I am in reality base in the Bay Area , so I will write chronicle and when I occur down to dissimilar story meetings , oftentimes I ’ll do our story meetings like we ’re doing this interview . But other times , I ’ll go down if it ’s a writer way situation or a prominent outlet . I ’ve been golden enough to be able to be one of the few writers who does n’t live in LA , but lives in the Bay Area , and can still be a part of that world .
They have enough combine or enough unwiseness to let me do that . [ Chuckles ] But I do often go down for voice records and I often go down for a story meetings , but in this special case , I was n’t able to and I would have loved to , but I was n’t . Then the pandemic hit and that was sort of the last affair I wrote before the pandemic , which was ironic .
Since you do advert that , do you imagine your storytelling would have exchange at all with your own firsthand experience of an event like that ?
Paul Giacoppo : That ’s a really keen query . People have asked the question of , " How do you think it touch on to it ? " Would I write it other than now ? Dang , that ’s a really expectant interrogative sentence . Part of me wants to say yes , the life experience of the last two year was dissimilar and , of course , I ’d approach it otherwise . And part of me wants to say there ’s a eternity to comics and the story . My guess is just the sensibility and the original moments of the chronicle plausibly would make it very similar to what we adjudicate to do here , which was just order a story about somebody coming out into the world .
And I think that we might have jest about it , and possibly there might have been a small bit more , but I guess in this particular case , it was probably an archetypal story that was more inspired by similar stories . So it ’s a bit of Indiana Jones , it ’s a bit of Planet of the Apes and there ’s a gross ton of DC and Kirby . So those kinds of matter likely would n’t have gone away . Although I ’m gon na mention something really quickly , have you seenthe movie Love and Monsters ?
Oh , yes . I bed that movie .
Paul Giacoppo : Same thing , correct ? When I saw that , it was my pandemic movie , I view in the pandemic , but it must have been write before . It ’s about being locked down and not being allowed out and then finally somebody ventures out and learns to populate in the new world . And I thought , " That ’s the movie I would pen . If I was gon na write now and go back in time and steal somebody ’s estimate , that ’s the one I would slip . " [ Laughs ] Because , to me , that feel more like a story that was written after the pandemic .
This short ends on quite the interesting notation , and there ’s sure enough way for more . A lot of the people that I ’ve talked to so far have told me that there may be thoughts on more , but they may not be capable to verbalize about it . Can you share your view on possibly continuing the story put onward ?
Paul Giacoppo : Only from the standpoint of a fan or someone like yourself in the industry . I love things like this and would love to see more of it . That ’s the only context of use in which I can gloss . I can say that . Other interviews I ’ve given , and in other conversation I ’ve had with people who ’ve view it , that ’s been the one thing that ’s derive up every time . One of the first articles that get along up when it was attach to the Justice Society movie was an article in Forbes , and that was one of the first things that it aver is like , " This world is crying out for a whole series . "
I would love to do [ it ] . If you see that mapping of the Earth A.D. , every continent is ingest over by different animals and different disasters and the oceans are boiling and tornadoes and vortexes . The taradiddle I would love to tell is Kamandi ’s on a quest across this world and traveling to a unexampled and crazy part of the next world as he proceed toward the seeking . Who knows if they ’ll do anything , but I ’d love to see anybody talk about it . It ’s just the variety of cool affair we need right now .
