As the first Robin he started the trend of youngsters in motive becoming heroes under the Dark Knight ’s guardianship , and as Nightwing he ’s become a solo submarine revered by colleagues and fan likewise , many see him as the rightful heir to Bruce ’s bequest . Though some might argue whetherNightwing or Batman Beyond merit to be Batman ’s replacement , they ’re not the only campaigner . Recently , another kinfolk member has step in and taken right to that bequest by personnel , making the perfect contention all the while .

TheDC Black Label series , Batman / Catwomanby Tom Kingand Clay Mann take on a deep dive into the nominal characters ' long and storied relationship in the past , present , and future , including the complicated relationship their daughter , Helena Wayne , has with their legacy . After Bruce ’s death , the future of Batman sits in oblivion . Dick is commissioner of the Gotham Police Department , and Helena has taken to the street as Batwoman to impart on her parents ' legacy . In issue 11 , her roughshod tactics , however , drew the attention of Nightwing , who confronted her inside the Bat Cave . It turned out to be a critical mistake , as Helena promptly bump off of Dick , vanquish the living daylights out of him while swear she is the rightful successor to her Padre , despite Nightwing being the oldest of Bruce ’s ward .
Helena ’s speech — and subsequent beatdown — utterly demonstrate why she ’s correct . Dick Grayson may be the oldest of Batman ’s wards , but no penis of the Batfamily embodies Bruce like Helena . Not only isHelena Batman ( and Catwoman ’s ) biologic child , and a naturally gifted paladin , but she inherit Bruce ’s brutal , frightening nature , make her the prime nominee to take over as Batman . Dick , on the other mitt , is simply too soft around the edges to be a suitable Batman . Grayson ’s optimism alone puts him in stark contrast to the brood nature of Bruce , who ’s very line of descent is rooted in disaster and payback . In reception to his own personal tragedies alongside his father figure ’s dismal outlook , Dick became a beacon of hope and optimism , taking away many of the acuate edges that make Batman such a venerate entity .
Helena , meanwhile , has embraced her father ’s tactics and way . She adopted not only his hardened mental attitude and dim outlook , but the tactical ruthlessness Bruce so utterly used to assume fearfulness in his enemies . Helena even showed this off in their competitiveness , luring in Dick with flattering conversation before leveling him and tossing him out of the Bat Cave with authority . In one competitiveness , Batwomandid everything thatNightwingnever would . While that ’s what makes him a great grinder in his own right , it ’s proof that Helena Wayne , not Dick Grayson , is designate to becomeBatmanafterBruce Wayne .
