Requiem for a Dream
Of all the characters to appear in a Darren Aronofsky movie , Jennifer Connelly ’s inRequiem for a Dreammay have received the most tragical closing . Darren Aronofsky has some weird movies , correct ? There ’s a lot to say about them , but whenever I leave one , one of my first thoughts is , " That was uncanny " . I eff weird in my movies , though , so I ’m not complaining , and I ’m sure as shooting not say his movies are olde worlde or oddball ; they are weird to the extreme point . Unnervingly so . Even in his most " run aground " picture ( The matman ? ) I ca n’t serve but feel uncomfortable while watching .
I , and plenty of other people around the internet , have seldom feel more uncomfortable watching a movie than I did watching Aronofsky ’s 2000 psychological dramaRequiem for a aspiration . Despite that music genre verbal description , it borders on psychological horror . A split up tale that follows four case in the throes of drug addiction , Aronofsky has an unflinching center examine the destruction drugs and addiction can lead in . It ’s the case of movie you might not want to watch double , andwhen it comes to Marion Silver ’s ( Jennifer Connelly ) story , getting through it once is tough enough .
Jennifer Connelly Stars In Requiem For A Dream As Marion Silver
Marion Is An Aspiring Clothing Designer
Jennifer Connelly is one of the four jumper lead inRequiem for a Dream , alongside Ellen Burstyn as Sara Goldfarb , Jared Leto as Harry Goldfarb , and Marlon Wayans as Tyrone C. Love . Marion is Harry ’s girlfriend , and the pair are addicted to heroin . They have high-flown plans , such as open a clothing store for Marion ’s designs . When their acquaintance Tyrone is get up in a gang shootout he had no part in , Harry and Marion use their saving to bail him out . Simultaneously , the heroin supply dry out up , a termination of gang warfare .
Marlon Wayans spread up about why he almost turned down Requiem for a aspiration and what ultimately convinced him to join the psychological drama .
At desperate straights and suffer from secession , Harry encourages Marion to become a sex activity prole . As Marion stay on her work in the sex trade , her human relationship with Harry becomes strained , and when Harry is sent to clink , she ’s entirely alone . Desperate , she begins working for a pandar , Big Tim ( Keith David ) , who subject her to humiliating grouping sex in front of a scoff crowd in edict to get drugs . Jennifer Connelly ’s character endsRequiem for a Dreamcurled up in a fetal position on her couch , just like the others , as the leitmotiv " Lux Aeterna " by Clint Mansell swells .
Marion Receives The Most Disturbing End In The Movie
Marion Has Yet To Reach Her Bottom In Requiem For A Dream
Out of all four disturbingendings inRequiem for a Dream , Marion ’s unnerved me the most . While she ’s wave up on her couch , the camera spin upward to show all her clothing pattern littered around her . It ’s a powerful visual . Her old dreams are literally scattered around her as she cowers away from them . What gets me even more is the looking at on her face . Marion is smiling in the scene . In her idea , she succeeded ; she bring the drugs she urgently call for . It ’s a haunting coup d’oeil at what ’s in computer memory for her .
Only Marion appears " happy " . This is alarming because it indicates Marion is not at her bottom just yet like the other characters .
Tyrone is clapperclaw in jail , Harry has his sleeve amputate , and Sara is catatonic . For these three character , as tragic as their arcs have been , they ’ve at least do to some sort of close . The door is left wide opened for Marion , however . Tyrone is heartsick and exhausted , Harry is sobbing in a hospital bed , and Sara ca n’t acknowledge her onetime Friend . Only Marion appears " happy " . This is alarming because it indicates Marion is not at her bottom just yet like the other characters . There are more horrors and devastation in computer memory for her .

I have no hint if Tyrone and Harry are drop dead to use their predicaments as a accelerator to break away ego - destruction , but it ’s possible . Sara was not able to escape , but at the very least , she ca n’t fall further . Marion , on the other hired man , has been honour with what she ’s been chasing the whole movie . She scored the drugs , andthe grin on her boldness suggests she is pleased with the trade she ’s made : her dream and safety for heroin . It ’s devastating , and it ’s Aronofsky letting the consultation know the pain these character feel does not end once the credits roll .
What Connelly And Aronofsky Thought About Requiem For A Dream’s Ending
Aronofsky Refused To Cut Any Part Of The Ending
Jennifer Connelly and Darren Aronofsky have speak about their meter withRequiem for a Dream , and both understood what a ruinous story and cease it was for Marion . During aVanity Faircareer equipment failure , Connelly talk about the film ,
" Her [ Marion ’s ] life , it was so far out from my own and it felt like an opportunity to really utilise my imagination and try and build up something , build a fibre . And I spent a portion of prison term with multitude who were very generous with me , who really shared their experiences with me . "
On how she felt after the functioning , Connelly said it was emotionally drain , and she needed time to reclaim ( viaBBC ) ,
" I was really attend forward to have the role out of my system . I went on vacation afterwards to Costa Rica . I took my two - class - old , and my best friend , and we went and I float in the ocean for two workweek to clean myself . It was hard , really severe to go through , emotionally . It was draining , lamentable , and uncomfortable . "
Darren Aronofsky say aboutRequiem for a Dreamback when it came out ( viaIndieWire ) ,
" And so I retrieve ' Requiem ' is not gratuitous in any elbow room . The MPAA had a problem with the 3 - minute climax of the film . The intact picture has been construct to climax in that 3 minutes . It ’s meant to be an acute bombardment of sound and image . And if I was to reduce in any way that sequence — it ’s intensity — I retrieve I would undermine the whole purpose of the moving-picture show . "
Those last three minutes are indeed vivid ; that ’s kind of an understatement . Until this point , Connelly ’s most renowned roles had been inLabyrinth , The Rocketeer , andDark City ; she had carefully balance a career between more hearing - pleasing fare with some darker projects that suggested her willingness to experiment . Requiem for a Dreamwas a striking step in a focus no one would have expected , but she wholly nailed the part . A large reason the flick is in any style palatable is because of Connelly ’s poignant and tangible carrying out .
Darren Aronofsky Often Gives His Characters Tragic Endings
Marion Silver’s Ending Is Worse Than Any Of Aronofsky’s Characters
As tragical as Marion ’s ending is inRequiem for a Dream , it ’s par for the course when it comes to Darren Aronofsky motion-picture show . The film maker loves to deal in psychological tragedy and his case seldom get felicitous termination . If they do , it ’s usually because they ’ve meet so much that the only path to go is up . InThe Whale , Charlie ’s ( Brendan Fraser ) life history is unfeignedly depressing , but he sort of have a happy ending , though it ’s unclear what really happens . InNoah , Noah ( Russell Crowe ) reconciles with his kinfolk and God , but only after nearly losing his mind to chaos and alcohol .
Jennifer Connelly and Darren Aronofsky reunited in 2014’sNoah .
Then there are all the Darren Aronofsky characters who did get frightful finish to their stories . InBlack Swan , Nina Sayers ( Natalie Portman ) gives herself over , mind and torso , to becoming a star topology danseuse , and in the process whole loses herself . Though she take herself " perfect " , she also bleeds out , and presumptively dies if that fade to white intend anything . InThe Wrestler , Robin Ramzinski ( Mickey Rourke ) basically takes his own life by performing a wrestling move he lie with will kill him . However , Marion ’s fate inRequiem for a Dreamis more tragic than any of those .
In a distorted room , Nina and Robin at least received the praise and recognition they had worked their whole lives for , as misguided as those dreams were . Marion does not pursue her ambition ; she replaces her veridical pipe dream of being a clothing designer with a new one : acquiring heroin . It ’s both a simple ambition and an implausibly complicated one . Jennifer Connelly ’s fiber , at the end ofRequiem for a Dream , does realize her fresh dream , but now , she will have to chase it daily until she no longer can .
