The immeasurably evilDC ComicssupervillainDarkseidhas a surprisingly sexist origin story , and instead of doing away with this tired trope the newInfinite Frontierera actually doubled down on fault his female parent for his queasy nature . Darkseid is pure evil , and while his female parent Heggra is sure a dire female parent , it is ridiculous to claim that her awfulness is what originated his dark psyche . Darkseid ’s suprisingly sympathetic originframes him as the result of defective mothering , and further perpetuate damaging stereotypes around motherhood , inappropriately placing the blame alone on Heggra ’s back .
First introduced in 1970’sSuperman ’s Pal Jimmy Olsen#134 by Jack Kirby , Darkseid is the choose name of Prince Uxas , 2nd - in - line to the throne of Apokolips and one of the New Gods . From puerility Darkseid had dismal and untrustworthy ambitions , polish off his older brother Drax to claim the fabled Omega Force and pushing himself to the front of the strain for the commode . finally Darkseid met and fell in honey with the Apokoliptan sorceress and scientist Suli . But in revisit Heggra ’s revenge – kill Suli for ' make Darkseid faint ' – the real question that arises is , " Why did DC demand to keep this origin ? "

This descent story , using an overdone " bad mother " cliché , has not been referenced in years , make theInfinite Frontierera the perfect opportunity for DC Comics to adjust Darkseid ’s history and concentrate the overpowering " mother inculpation " that is present . Not only does the publisher not do this , but in JusticeLeague Incarnate # 5 - - written by Joshua Williamson and Dennis Culver with artistry by Hi Fi , Jesús Merino , and Andrei Bressan – Darkseid apply the memory of his wife ’s murder as fuel for his engagement against The Great Darkness . InDarkseid ’s origin story , his female parent Heggra is literally the cause of his descent into a closed - off , loveless , furore - filled iniquity being , when in reality it is readable that he was always destined to become the God of Evil , despot of Apokolips .
In a report titled " The dead and the abhorred : Mindhunterand the persistence of mother - blame " ( viaSagePub ) authors Michele Byers and Rachael Collins discuss how " female parent - incrimination continue a key motive of mainstream cultural narratives about trigger-happy maleness " and that it is often used not only to " corroborate the auctorial genuineness of the virile serial killer"but finally informs all of the character’s"ways of knowing and being in the mankind . " In a vacuum , Darkseid ’s origin story might not be overtly sexist . But placed in the big context of decades of shaming mothers have endured as the ace seemingly responsible for their sons ' descents into wickedness , this story perpetuates sexist image and ideas about motherhood . Fathers are rarely blamed to the same arcdegree ( and applies to Darkseid ’s father Yuga Khan as well ) , free from metier assumptions they were n’t " warm enough " or did n’t ply " enough erotic love , " resulting in their children becoming psychotic killers .
DC Comics had the chance to retcon awayDarkseid ’s sexist inception storysimply by making his wife Suli the target of an character assassination endeavour on his life , instead of motherly brutality . The emotional impact would be the same , minus a female parent blame for creation of the literal God of Evil . Origins are retconned all the time by DC Comics , andInfinite Frontierintroduced the Darkseid of Prime Earth continuity as an amalgam of all past Darkseids in this creation , intend DC could have highlighted a different origin story for this"Ultimate Darkseid . "
Heggra was clearly a direful female parent , and there is way that DC Comics could have included her awfulness in a way that did n’t frame in her as the direct cause ofDarkseid’sevil nature , pock her against Suli as the one who require him to " unmask Uxas , " and inadvertently continuing the harmful trope of the " big female parent " origin in theInfinite Frontierera .
