Why was the timing mightily for inclose the CW reading of Batwoman in the comics ? Ryan Wilder exists in the Prime - Earth world , but this is the Earth - Prime universe .

Kelly Larson : The timing was perfect for the show because not only is this a chance for Ryan Wilder as Batwoman to appear as the focus of a DC comic Good Book , but also for our entire form to make their comic book debuts . Given how hard Javicia , Meagan , Cam , Nicole , Rachel , Nick , Robin – our whole cast really – have shape to impart their iteration of these characters to screen , it ’s been so heartwarming to get to invest their versions in a comic Good Book . It ’s honoring them really , and I ’m so grateful to be part of it .

Natalie Abrams : I think most writer in the CWverse have , at some power point or another , wanted to get the fortune to write a comic that live in the sandpile we ’re play in every day . This was an extremely exciting chance that Kelly and I both jump off at when our amazing showrunner Caroline Dries came to us with DC ’s plan . I grew up obsessionally reading superhero comics , which offered escape , but also provided relatable story that were wrapped up in musical genre . And the biggest thing I learned was that everybody deserve to see themselves represented – whether it be on screen or in the page of a comic book .

How did this project come up to be and what drew you to doing an Earth - Prime Batwoman floor initially ? What were the big differences between writing the show , as opposed to compose the comic ?

Natalie : DC pass on out to our various showrunners about want to do a six - publication event in the comics , where each show ( Batwoman , Superman & Lois , DC ’s Legends of Tomorrow , DC ’s Stargirl and The Flash ) would have a solo story , as well as a small tease to what would ultimately be a bounteous crossing in the last comedian . From there , writer from each show all jumped on a Zoom call to discuss the possibilities of the overall account , as well as make out ideas of things we want to speak from our own shows that we may not have clip to do in a 42 - minute of arc episode .

Batwoman Earth-Prime

Kelly : I ’ve always want to be part of drop a line a comedian for our show ’s Batwoman , and so when it all started and we start together with the other shows , I was like a kid in a confect shop .

Natalie : Those monumental zoom with writer from across all the display involved were some of the most sport I ’ve had in my career . I really nerded out , particularly because – due to the pandemic – a lot of us have n’t been in strong-arm writer ' room in so long , which means we also have n’t been able to bump into each other in the halls of Burbank Studios or at the commissary . I missed the camaraderie .

Kelly : You entail you miss the nerd wars between shows ? Because I miss that .

Batwoman Earth-Prime

Natalie : And it was entrancing to hear where each of the shows was in the physical process of demote their season – yeah , I was dead there for the spoiler .

Kelly : As for the departure , write for telly is a much dissimilar medium , even using different software and format . Comic book penning is a different brawn you use , but just as tremendous as TV . It challenges you to get every intention into one line , one figure as opposed to TV where you have elbow room to stretch it out . So it ’s been fun getting to spring into these waters , and it do you appreciate those who have write before us , like Greg Rucka , Marguerite Bennett and James Tynion IV .

What ’s in store for Ryan , Renee Montoya , and Luke Fox in this taradiddle ?

Batwoman Earth-Prime

Kelly : There ’s pass to be a lot of feelings .

Natalie : Get the tissues quick !

Kelly : All . The . tissue . Since this take berth right after Alice and Mary skip out on the Bat Team in the mid - season finale , our heroes are feeling bleak . It ’s a moment we get to see how Ryan handled the emotions of Mary give them behind after being infect by Poison Ivy , but also how Luke is processing .

Batwoman Earth-Prime

Natalie : Also , Ryan , Renee and Luke are far from the only characters who appear in the issue . We really need to give passion to our integral cast , so you will see moment with everyone . And what ’s fun is that fans of the show already know how the time of year cease and where some of these eccentric terminate up — cough , Wildmoore . We were developing and write the comic as the writers ’ room was breaking the end of the time of year , and so we unquestionably flirt into some of the emotions that would be forthcoming .

How sport was it to bestow Lena Luthor back to the Arrowverse in this news report ?

Kelly : I ’m gon na get Natalie take this one because I feel like I can sense her excitement through the ether field .

Batwoman Earth-Prime

Natalie : Yes , despite us currently being in dissimilar countries at the moment , Kelly just have it away !

Kelly : It ’s like we share the same wonk brain or something .

Abrams : When Supergirl started , I was a reporter for Entertainment Weekly and covered the show from the very source . So I already had an affinity for the cast and for the Supergirl fandom . I was so golden to then get the chance to compose an episode of Supergirl back in season 4 after I became a television receiver writer . I had actually been struggle in my personal life a bit when I go into their writers ’ room , and get to write for characters that I loved and admired so much pay me a creative outlet that terminate up being really cathartic . ( Hence the wounds and scars delivery that Kelly gives to Alex in Episode 420 . ) This is a really long way of state that I would ’ve loved to write for those quality again . severely , the amount of times I ’ve pitched a crossing over between Batwoman and Supergirl in our author ’ room could probably be a boozing game .

Batwoman Earth-Prime

Kelly : And we ’d all end up sloshed in the end . But in the unspoilt of way .

Abrams : Alas , the pandemic made any crossover reasonably unsufferable . So with Supergirl cease their ravel and therefore not being part of the comical effect , both Kelly and I felt we wanted to find a way to get that crossover to find somehow — and show the Supergirl fan a lilliputian making love as well . Lena felt like the perfect type to bring into this world . She ’s always been a force to be cypher with , she ’s passing glorious and she knows what it ’s like to take with a megalomaniacal comrade — something Ryan is scramble with in time of year 3 . Also , Lena ’s develop so much over the form of Supergirl and fans now get to see a petty bit of what her biography is like after the show has finish .

Kelly : I ’ve bed Katie since the day of Merlin , Dracula , and even yes – that Princess movie with Sam Heughan . So getting to write in Lena , someone Katie had taken so much time to perfect over the twelvemonth , and take part in her comic debut , was a aspiration .

Batwoman Earth-Prime

How about introducing a vast baddie into the story in Clayface ? What character does he play ?

Natalie : He ’s our villain of the effect . At the end of season 2 , the prize Batman had kept from various infamous DC super - villains were lost in the river and our third time of year has been about our BatTeam trying to recuperate those trophies . Of course , some of those have go down into the wrong hand — The brainsick Hatter ’s hat , Poison Ivy ’s vine , and , in this font , someone is infect by Clayface ’s mud .

Kelly : It was a persona we did n’t get to do on the show due to Clayface being a difficult part to wreak to life , but it ’s one that everyone bed – I mean Harley Quinn made us love him even more , right ? Our individual who has been taint by Clayface is grapple with the insane amount of power the clay bring them . It could alter anyone – but it ’s how they palm that change that is important to dissect . Everyone has gone through insane things happening to them , so you blaming it on the Earth can only go so far .

Comics

When write this tale , how was the collaboration   process like with the CW , as this taradiddle is canyon in the Batwoman universe ?

Natalie : Also , our executive producer Chad Fiveash and James Stoteraux were , as always , extremely helpful through the growing process of the story .

What was it same to work with creative person Clayton Henry and Marcelo Maiolo on this projection ?

Batwoman

Kelly : GODSENT . Those two military personnel are preposterously talented and I like that the world would put them on a footstall . The mental imagery , the colors , the poses , all of it was done so quickly and dead .

Natalie : I feel like people read funnies and sometimes think it ’s just the writer who deserve credit and that ’s the furthest thing from the truth . We can write the words and distinguish the imagination of a panel , but without the creative person , the colorists , the letterers , none of this happens . They are vital and essential to this outgrowth and unfeignedly deserve as much acknowledgment . I ’m so grateful to everyone who sour on this issue .

Who would you say this book is for ? Comic readers who want to memorise more about the CW Batwoman ? Or do you see it as an avenue for Batwoman fans to learn more about the comics ? or both ?

Kelly : It ’s a piece of both . As someone who gets overwhelmed trying to dip a toe into a run of strip , I mean it ’s a gateway for comics for some , and then an brainstorm into our show for others . Our show is so unique , even in our rooter , that we all want anyone to be able to start into our Earth and get excited . experience hear and see . So hopefully this comic is a room to show others that we hump the world of DC and we screw the cosmos of our show . We eff both and want devotee from both side of meat to come up a seat at our table .

Natalie : Well said , Kelly ! I was in a comical book store up here in Toronto — shoutout to the astonishing staff at Silver Snail ! — and I take in a customer asking his admirer whether he can just pop with any issue of a comedian . And his ally was like , “ Well , you might not understand what ’s happening . You got ta jump in at the start of a run . ” While that can be true sometimes , I also think if you plunk up any issue of a comic , you ’d get a terminated fib — so much so that you ’d want to buy the late issue to find out more and the next and the next and so on . But for those who want to start on a fresh run , guess what ? Earth - Prime is the start of a new political campaign ! Come join us in the sandbox !

What do you go for readers get from the playscript ?

Kelly : They get excited . They get eager for more . They require to rewatch season 3 on HBO Max so they can live over the moments we cite in the comic .

Natalie : I desire they see a history that — despite being about a superhero — they can still pertain to . Javicia brings such heart to Ryan Wilder on the show , and I think Ryan Wilder ’s Batwoman will too in the funnies .

Kelly : I need the readers to also get that we do this for everyone : the lover , the bunch , the form , the writers . We do n’t go into a creative medium for selfish reasons , no one does . And we owe a raft to not only the people who have made the show , but the hoi polloi who watch it and keep us on air travel . This comic is a love missive to them .

give thanks you so much to Kelly Larson and Natalie Abrams for taking thetime to speak with us aboutEarth - Prime : Batwoman#1 . The new comic will be uncommitted on Tuesday .
