The final entry in Bill Willingham and Brian Level’sBatman vs. Bigby ! A Wolf in Gothampicks up with the titulary fighter arrive at Bookworm ’s lair to take him down once and for all . When they lash out , they ’re greeted with an undeniable force from the ancient heroic epos , Beowulf : Grendel ’s mother . While Bigby wield her in an epic engagement , Batman drop dead after Bookworm only to line up himself being beaten savagely . He even manages to have blood drawn while being attacked and things begin to depend black . That is until Bookworm observe something and Batman ’s big enigma is finally unleashed .

With a quick chemical reaction , a toxic green gas emits from his utility knock that manages to melt Bookworm ’s skin to help him get away . This toxin isunlike anything Batman has releasedbefore and it ’s scary to see something so hefty within limb ’s grasp , especially coming from someone who free-base his morals on not kill . surely , the poison does n’t kill Bookworm , but the fact Batman needs to take an antidote to live it point that this is more powerful than his smoke bombs or knockout gas . Seeing Bookworm ’s skin dethaw into something out ofReturn of the Living Deadshows just how deadly it is , and it open up a whole can of worms of just when Batman could let loose this toxic substance again .
On top of that , the chemical substance released from the public utility company belt is so herculean that it managesto knock out Bigbyin his wolf form and seemingly vote out Grendel ’s female parent at the remainder of their fight . These two characters are hinted to be gods in the DC Universe , as betoken by Grendel ’s mother ’s long suit and her calling herself someone that ’s " amply able to defeat a simple God of Wolves . " Since this gas managed to take them both out , it puts questions in the reader ’s mind of just how muscular it can be against other DC baddie . Could it defeat Solomon Grundy ? Clayface ? Darkseid ? The possibilities are sempiternal , and if this gas makes its way into major DC stories , it ’ll be interesting to see just how muscular it really can be .
Of course , it ’s safe to say that this may be one of the few times , if not the last time , referee will seethis method used by Batman . bonk his moral computer code and maneuver to subdue criminals and not vote down them , he may only have this selection as an right-down last resort . Still , the fact that it ’s even an option should be enough to make some of Batman ’s biggest rivals shudder . This toxin is by far the deadliest weapon system fromBatman ’s utility belt to date , and it ’ll be interesting to see ifBigby Wolfever comes back from theFablesuniverse to team up with him again after get it .
